MORE ABOUT THIS ITEM

A Preventable Problem

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). All are major public health problems in the United States. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a large vein, often in the leg. Part of a clot may break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism and possibly death.

DVT and PE are serious, yet often under diagnosed. Prevention is preferable to treatment. When at-risk patients for thromboembolism are identified, doctors look at two potential prophylactic measures: anti-coagulation medications and mechanical methods such as lower limb compression.¹
