In 2015, the average number of survey deficiencies for nursing facilities in the U.S. was 8.6, the highest number of deficiencies since 2010. Just one year later, the Regulations of Participation were introduced, the largest update to nursing home regulations in more than two decades. One way providers are navigating the changing requirements is investing in technology that provides real time feedback on potential survey deficiencies and helps create a plan to take proactive action.
For Connecticut-based Vernon Manor Care, technology has played a critical role in enhancing clinical quality. While the facility has 40 years of experience providing care to the local community, owner Paul Liistro understood that the changing regulations called for proactive measures in order to set the facility up for success.
Through a partnership with Medline, Vernon Manor found their solution in abaqis®, a web-based system that manages their survey readiness and QAPI. The system uses a combination of resident interviews and observations to provide actionable data that identifies regulatory areas the facility should focus on to improve quality improvement efforts.
Highlights of Vernon Manor Care’s 2017 Results
- Zero severe deficiencies (G-level or higher) compared to several G-level deficiencies
- Only three standard survey deficiencies, whereas the Connecticut average is 5.2
