Recognizing those who positively impact healthcare every day

Care isn’t delivered just at the bedside. You can spot it in places like the clinical lab, among technicians and throughout environmental services. No matter the care setting, healthcare workers play a vital role in our everyday lives.

In 2020, the Medline Works of Heart Program began recognizing healthcare workers for putting patients at the center of everything they do. See how they fearlessly go the distance for those in their care and share how you drive inspiration in healthcare every day.

Alexa Lean
Place of work: University of Washington School of Medicine
Location: Seattle, Washington
Anesthesiologists play a vital role in making patients feel safe. For Alexa Lean, it is a critical moment to connect, when patients may feel their most vulnerable.
“Alexa has an amazingly kind and upbeat attitude, no matter the time of day or night. She has a unique ability to connect with her patients and families that comes from genuine compassion and just a fun, smart personality,” says Emily Knipper, attending anesthesiologist, UW Medicine. “She manages to make patients, families, and colleagues laugh and smile in the midst of challenging circumstances and long days.”

Omar Kane
Place of work: Albany Medical Center
Location: Albany, New York
Whether it’s cleaning rooms or delivering meals, Omar Kane is passionate about connecting with everyone he helps as a patient support associate at Albany Medical Center in New York.
“My son did not like something on his plate and Omar noticed he wasn’t eating. He quickly addressed it and brought my son a new meal. Omar made him feel like the most important patient in the hospital.”

Katie Alvarado
Place of work: FHN
Location: Freeport, Ill.
As a leading healthcare provider in Stephenson County, Ill., FHN set up a COVID-19 mobile testing site/patient aid tent to keep the community safe. The organization needed a leader to develop protocols for the site. That’s when Katie Alvarado, director of imaging, took on the challenge.
“We needed somebody who wouldn’t see barriers, but would see opportunities and areas of improvement to initiate. We saw all that in Katie,” says Kathryn Martinez, FHN’s chief operating officer and chief nursing officer.
