Dale Bratzler, DO, MPH, Medical Director of the Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality, addressed the soon-to-be-rolled-out National Quality Foundation-endorsed performance measure of urinary catheter removal and examined how this issue came about in the first place.

“There was probably nobody asking the question, ‘Do we really still need the urinary catheter postoperatively?’” Bratzler surmised.

The proposed performance measure, which is expected to go into effect in October of 2009, will look at whether urinary catheters were removed by postoperative Day 2, with the surgery taking place on Day 0.
