Medline recently re-designed our over pack/repack boxes to utilize less overall cardboard surface area by making the flaps smaller while maintaining the same amount of cubic inches inside the carton. Our packaging improvement initiatives also analyze the opportunity to eliminate inner wraps, use of recycled cardboard, paper versus plastic and a pallet optimization. In some cases we look at the optimum package and redesign the product to create better efficiency without changing the functionality or quality. “Smarter” packaging can reduce the energy needed to produce and transport the product and result in less waste for the customer to dispose of, all of which helps to control costs and reduce landfill addition.
